The irrigation sector in the Valencia area was forced to start measuring the levels in their channels due to updated regulations. For this an inexpensive, discrete and easy-to-install system was required.

 The irrigation sector in the Valencia area was forced to start measuring the levels in their channels due to updated reguations. For this an inexpensive, discrete and easy-to-install system was required. 
Solution
The OTT systems incl. ecoLog 500 sensors measure the water level every 15 min and transmit the data to the Basin servers every 3 days. The basin then applies a rating curve and converts the levels in flow. 
Benefits
The long battery life of the ecoLog 500, the discrete installation and the low costs compared to other suppliers provided all the customer needed. Also, .mis files can be integrated by the basin, making it easier. 

Project Description

Irrigation authorities in the Valencia region were required to begin continuous water level measurements in their irrigation channels to comply with new regulations. This called for a simple, cost-effective solution with a highly discreet installation, as the sites are exposed to a high risk of vandalism and customer budgets were limited.

The OTT HydroMet solution perfectly met these requirements, offering reliable monitoring with minimal visible infrastructure.


Components of the Monitoring Solution

The installed OTT HydroMet systems in Valencia measure water levels every 15 minutes and transmit the data to the Basin servers every three days.
Once received, the Basin applies a rating curve to convert water levels into flow data.

  • Installation and SIM card provided by the local installer
  • FTP server and level-to-flow conversion managed by the Basin

Why Did the Customer Choose Our Solution?

Vandalism concerns played a key role in the decision-making process. The customer deliberately ruled out solutions that included solar panels or other visible components.

They were also convinced by:

The long battery life of the ecoLog series
Low total system costs compared to alternative suppliers
Simple and fast installation – typically completed in half a day

Comparable OTT HydroMet systems installed elsewhere have been operating maintenance-free for more than three years and will continue to do so without requiring a battery change for many more years.

An additional advantage was the ability to integrate .mis files into the Basin’s existing workflows, simplifying data processing on their side.

This was not a single large project, but rather several smaller implementations across the same irrigation sector, rolled out step by step in the Valencia region.


Conclusion

The Basin now receives reliable, automated measurements, and irrigation operators are fully compliant with the new regulatory requirements.

Looking ahead, the new OTT ecoLog 1000, which also supports .csv data output, could serve as an attractive alternative for future installations.
